Patience is like water …

Patience is like water — when you have a well of it to draw from, you don’t think about it. But … when that well runs low, all you can think about is how much you don’t have access to what you need.

For me, patience and trust are tied tightly together. Trust asks you to have faith in yourself and the Universe and rely on your knowing that, no matter what is happening, you will find a way to the right answer (eventually). Patience is the way — and is easy if you allow it to be by responding in the moment. When we struggle with patience, it’s often an indication we are reacting rather than responding.

Reactions are like giant potholes on our life’s highway. They are deep and jarring. They rattle us from top to bottom and back up again.

It is hard to be patient when you’re jarred off course by a reaction.

The rub is, we often don’t recognize that it’s the reaction, not the actual thing, that causes us to step off our path and into an impatient state.

In Gestalt, we work on removing the elements that caused the reaction in the first place — and, by so doing, we remove the potholes way down the highway that would have caused that jarring moment.

So many of us haven’t taken the time to think about who we are in the world since we left high school or college. The aptitude tests disappeared, the school counselor fell out of our lives, and people stopped asking us what we want to be when we grow up. We became who...
